Adelaide : Central Market & Chinatown
I love roaming around the downtown Adelaide area, once you emerge from the metro station you will be greeted by these beautiful old buildings, full of colonial history. Such a pedestrian-friendly city. No one seems to be rushing anywhere, no haggard-looking yuppies running towards another appointment......the city exudes a laid-back, relaxed charm.
Everyone seems so polite and have the time to say 'thank you' to the bus drivers when they alight. Life seems so unhurried and not adrenaline-filled.
We took the tram from the CBD area to the South Terrace stop, the closest tram stop to our destination --- the centrally located Adelaide Central Market. Originally built and opened to the public in 1869, the market has now expanded to include the central market arcade where fresh produce abounds, dotted around it with artsy cafes (to have that fresh cup of coffee in between the market browsing) and restaurants. Abutting it is Adelaide's own Chinatown.
The Central Market Arcade is divided into different sections, there is a fish & seafood section, the meat & poultry section, a separate block for cheese and other dairy products, etc. We had our coffee break at the Latvian Lunchroom, a Latvian/Baltic-inspired cafe complete with Latvian newspapers!
You know you are nearing Chinatown when most of the signages are painted in red and the whole area is festooned with hanging paper lanterns lol.
And I don't know what's a Hello Kitty Cafe doing here......but yeah, its there in case you fancy having coffee in a Hello Kitty cup (if I had my 6-yr old niece, Yvette, with me definitely yes!).
