Barrio Fiesta y Ciudad Fiesta : Which one is better?
Fiesta in the Philippines is a long-held Spanish era tradition. It is one of the cultural and religious major events in the country. Even the smallest barrio or sitio will have its own fiesta with the exact date normally during the feast day of their patron saint. Although for me, what comes to mind is immediately FOOD --- as in lots of it! The main staple of course is the Lechon --- or the roasted pork!During my September stay in the province, I was able to go to 3 fiestas; Consuelo, Surigao City, and my town. Umm, now you know the reason for the bloated jowls on my face! The extra chin and the additional curves! LOL
Celebration of fiestas differ from one place to another, from a small barrio to a small town and more so with that of a city. Everyone is invited, there is no such thing as an "uninvited guest" during fiestas --- Filipino hospitality at its best!Barrio fiestas are usually all about food. Although there are also festivities during the day, and well, sometimes into the night with the "baile" or the disco. When we were kids, we usually wait for the "peryahans" and the ferris wheel to come.
Big cities usually have a more elaborate preparation for the fiesta festivities. The 10th of September is the fiesta of Surigao City (the capital of our neighbor province - Surigao del Norte) and it played host to the colorful Bonok-bonok Festival. Even some of my aunts went there just to watch!
