Hikkaduwa

Two hours into our drive from Colombo, we veered off Galle Road and stopped at a roadside café. Well, I thought it was just a little café that you stop to cut off an otherwise long drive but when we went further inside, it opened into the beach area.

It was a still a bit early for the sun worshippers to be out topping their tans in the loungers but a few die hard ones were already walking by the beach. The waves are too rough for average swimmers, surfing, diving and now kitesurfing are the most popular activities here as you can see from the numerous dive centers around the area offering PADI certified courses.

This is backpacker central --- a place where all backpackers, surfers, party-goers converge and hang out. I heard that they normally have great beach parties (promise, I’ll come again next time!) here all the time.

We decided to plonk ourselves at the Top Secret Beach restaurant as it has a fantastic view of the beach and has this funky Arabian-style lounge area complete with multi-colored throw pillows! Lol Eyelovitttt!!!

Nothing much to see in this town except for the beach area, the town itself is just strung around the Colombo-Galle Road and can be so congested with vehicle traffic that in most days you would want to give it a miss! But what’s so great about the place is that, you have civilization on the other side and just 1 meter ahead you are in beach heaven!

Next destination – Unawatuna beach.
