Discovering the Treasures of Little India

It’s just a short hop on the number 7 bus along Orchard Road to the Bugis Junction where we started our walking tour of Little India. I’ve always wanted to explore the different neighborhoods here in Singapore. The city plays host to a diverse, multicultural community of Chinese, Indian, Malay and even other Asian and Western nationalities.

Smells of curry and the different spices that they use in their local cuisine wafts through the restaurants when we passed by, I even saw a Copper Chimney branch right across the mall although it was not as classy as the one I dined at in Jaipur a few years back. Restaurants advertise Tandoori menus. DVDs, comic books, and magazines about Bollywood actors abound in the streets. It really amazes me.

It is indeed a miniature Chennai or Bangalore transplanted in Singapore complete with a Hindu temple, they even have a mall selling everything Indian --- check out Mustafa Centre.

We went to visit some notable sights within the area like the,

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

Leong San Buddhist Temple

A pocket of India in the bustling, modern metropolis of Singapore --- a place where Singaporean-Indians can call “home”.
