Southeast Asia on a Budget...(part 4)

Thailand
The most popular destination in the region is Thailand. Even for most Southeast Asians, Thailand is always a part of the travel itinerary. We normally go en masse. As in whole families, groups of friends, (or is it the whole town?? Hehehe) go to Bangkok not just for the “out of this world” temples and palaces, most especially we go there for the SHOPPING! There are also lots of cheap tour packages starting from 3days/2nights to 7days/6nights combi of Bangkok + Phuket. For a more in-depth cultural introduction, you may want to continue on to Chiang Mai and visit the northern hill tribes like the famous long-necked Karens or ride an elephant through the forest.
Philippines
The Philippines is the only Catholic country in the southeast mainly due to its Spanish colonial heritage and you can see these influences in the numerous cathedrals around the cities. The Spanish language is also very entrenched especially in the South (Visayas & Mindanao regions) if you know how to count in Spanish then you can get by with the Bisayan (south) language. As an archipelago, the country is abundant in natural resources – you can easily find white sand beaches, majestic mountain ranges and tiny islands dotting the seas.

These are photos of my beloved hometown (home for me is the town of Madrid in the southeastern province of Surigao del Sur in Mindanao) taken last year.
I still have a few places to go and discover around the Southeast. I’m planning on going to Vietnam later this year or early next year but Myanmar remains elusive for me. I really wish I can go there and just walk around Bagan or Mandalay. Hmmm……let’s plan it then! Hahaha...how I wish its that easy to go there!
