Solar Eclipse in Maldives
Laamu Atoll, Maldives
Just came back from watching the Solar Eclipse………..
According to Wikipedia, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth.
What we had earlier is called an annular eclipse --- it occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon.
The Maldives has the longest eclipse viewing time at about 10:08 minutes but we went out early so we can really see the entire thing.....when the moon starts to cover up the sun till it moves out.
We initially thought of getting a basin and putting water on it……coz we don’t have any powerful screening glasses to use.......hahaha
But then the Engineering guys had a much better alternative…….. voila! The welding mask……Oo nga naman di ba! Lol
But it was really awesome! And yeah, we will not see another one here in Maldives like this till year 3043!!!

Re: solar eclipse, there will be other eclipses but a similar one with regards to distance & size of the moon will be in 3043.
